Happy Birthday

I’m not sure why but I sure do love a birthday party!!!  To me it’s special to get together with friends and family and enjoy food, drink and conversation.  Of course I don’t need a reason to get dressed up, but it sure is sweeter with people who you hold close to your heart!  Birthday’s are a time to enjoy, reflect, connect, indulge, celebrate and cheers!  I adore my friends and family.  Here are some of the looks that happened over my birthday celebration!  Thank you to all that are a part of my life.  I’m better for knowing you…you know who you are.  I’m ever grateful to be able to do what I love and love what I do.  Cheers to all!

Flower Pot Dirt Cake

Giving gifts is one of my absolute favorite all time things to do….especially when they are much deserved.  A close friend, teacher, and of course any special person who enhances my life would be surprised and happy to get one of these fun gifts.

This time of the year is so fun because everything is blooming and bright.  I saw my girl, Ree Drummond, aka “The Pioneer Woman” make these on her show and knew I had to make these this year for all the special ladies for Mother’s day.

Flower in a clay pot ‘dessert’ or dirt cakes

What you’ll need:  smallest clay pots, straws, fresh flowers, cake mix, pudding, chocolate cookies, wax paper, & ribbon

Line pots with wax paper & place cake mix in cupcake tins.

Place a cupcake or two in pot and put a straw down the middle.  Cut straw down.

Place pudding carefully on top and around the straw.  Then sprinkle ground up chocolate cookies over the pudding.

Add ribbon around the pot and insert a cut flower into the straw.

What I love about this gift is that when you first arrive, the women think it’s so cute and so nice, and then you get to tell them they can eat it!!! So fun!! I love a surprise!  Who wouldn’t want to get a dirt cake?  So far the response has been great!

My mom

DSC_0006She couldn’t be more beautiful.  I remember her as being such a hard worker, especially when she raised me by herself.  She always worked and was a loyal employee.  I remember there being times when she was so tired, but I just had to see my friend, who happened to live across town and she usually ended up driving me.  Whenever I had a new interest, she’d let me embrace it and pay for my lessons.  Being me, I would agonize over what to buy at the department store…she gave me a budget and I would take my time picking out and trying on everything.  I had the coolest room and when I was a teenager, I just had to have my own telephone line.  My mom would cook, clean, and do my laundry even after I was old enough to do it myself.  When I was older and had a step dad we’d go skiing every weekend in the winter and camping in the summer.  Now that I have children, organizing skiing every weekend is no small task and have yet to camp with them.

My mom knows how to celebrate life as well.  She has always been here for the births of my two boys, my husband’s 50th birthday, my 40th, every Christmas since my boys were born and even their birthday’s.  She never fails to be a call away to hear about us and the boy’s achievements.

I admire my mom for so many reasons and my boys adore their grandma.  Thank you mom and Happy Mother’s Day!  We love you.

Happy 8th Birthday James!

Handmade Valentine Cards

For me Valentine’s Day is really about my girlfriends…married or not, I think this holiday is the perfect time to recognize your friendships.

Giving something handmade is so very special.  It shows that you’ll take time out of your busy life to make something special!  What better way to show a friend how much you care for them.

Tips on making your own cards

  1.  Be creative with your papers-use gift wrap, textured paper, cardstock…go for it

2.  Load up the layers…like with all good design, there are several layers to add depth, interest and style

3.  Use stamps and different color ink pads

4.  Find some fun stickers, but limit yourself, so doesn’t end up looking cheap

5.  Add some shine with rhinestones and glitter glue

5.  Use finer tip sharpie markers

6.  Ribbons & Lace add so much

7.  Make sure you have supplies:  scissors, decorative scissors, glue & a hole punch

8.  Don’t make your cards all the same.  Think about who you are giving your card to and let their personality inspire you.

9.  If you are going to mail your card then make sure the envelope is cute as well…pink or red and add a nice sticker next to their name.  Don’t forget to use a colorful marker.

10.  Give your self time.  The layers of glue need to dry sometimes over night.  Ink needs to dry as well.  Give yourself weeks that way you can run to the store to pick up one more thing to add!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
