White for Spring events

I do love attending charity events and recently attended the annual Wentworth by the Sea Crossroads gala.  I don’t like keeping my look the same and enjoy experimenting with new hair and make up styles.  My beaded dress felt appropriate for a Spring event by the water.  It was on the shorter side, white and the beads are stitched in a slight chevron style.  The shoes stood out and I wanted them to have that bootie feel.  When I think of spring make up on my olive complexion I think of bright pink.  My toes and fingers along with my lips were covered in a deep pink color.  I layered on two long necklaces to give a flapper feel.  My hair dresser felt that I needed some pretty bling in my hair, so we stuck with a silvery sparkly flower.

Steps to getting dressed for a special event

If you want to stand out at an event, you must prepare well in advance to look appropriate and as beautiful as you can be.

  • 6-8 weeks before an event I start looking at dresses on line and I may even order one or two.  I enjoy shopping at sites that offer free shipping and returns.  Sometimes I’ll find a dress locally, but I give myself plenty of time for altering.  I like seeing what is trending and find inspiration on various sites.  It may be a dress length, color, cut or certain style that I decide to go with.  Once I decide what I want my “wow” piece to be, then I get focused.  For example, my last event I decided to wear fur and I wanted that to be my ‘wow’ piece so I decided to find a simple dress that wouldn’t take away for the fur.  Then the shoes were just as interesting but the jewelry was simple.  To see the fur, I needed my hair up, but wanted it to have an Old Hollywood feel.  Other times I want to dress color to be the ‘wow’ factor.  Then I keep the shoes neutral.
  • 4-5 weeks I make sure I’ve thought about my ‘vision’ of what I want the rest of the outfit to consist of.  I order shoes and jewelry with plenty of time for returns and reordering.
  • 4 weeks make sure you have hair and nail appointments set up for a couple of days before and a hair appointment on the day of your event.
  •  2 weeks before I nail down an inspirational hair photo.  I make sure I have the right handbag and coat to wear.
  • 1 week before I may attention to my body, face and teeth.  I make sure that I watch my sugar intake and regularly hit the gym.  I make sure that my face is kept clean and use my Clarisonic every other day.  I use Super Smile, which is a teeth whitening system.
  • 3-1 day before I make sure I get a fresh hair color, cut, eyebrow wax and toes and fingernails polished.   Also, steam your dress and make sure you have everything you may need, like padding for your heels, appropriate undergarments, double stick tape, and your lipstick.
  • Day of the event I I limit my water intake to avoid bloating.  In place of water I drink cranberry and coconut water.  I make sure I eat a big breakfast and protein filled lunch and plenty of snacking before I attend the event.
  • I shower making sure I wash my face and shave my legs and around 5 hours before the event I get my hair done.
  • 2 hours before we need to leave, I put my make up on.  I often have thought about the style of my face…do I go for a colorful eye, smokey eye or bold lipstick.  Decide what you want to enhance and make sure you’ve found colors that are trending and enhance your dress.  For example, when I wore a bright yellow dress I decided to go with bright pink lips and simple eye make up.  With the latest brown dress I went for a bronzed face.
  • 1 hour before I get dressed, pack my purse, brush my teeth and give myself time to snap a few photo before leaving.

If you follow this timeline or make your own, you’ll be sure to have a cohesive and polished look for any special event.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the most glamorous dress of all.................... Oh I do Darling................ Oh my, I'm feeling a deja vu coming on, and that reminds me, I need to call Savannah in A Southern Home.....

Going for Old Hollywood

Old Hollywood reminds me of hair pinned up, bright lips, gold shoes and fur.  When I dress for a special occasion, just putting on a pretty dress is not enough.  I enjoy having a vision and this time my vision started with wearing a fur.  I didn’t own a fur, or any of my look but I get jazzed by the challenge of finding my outfit.  The fundraiser was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston for Jaden’s Ladder.  When I’m at a classy hotel, I like to dress the part.

The skinny on my look~

I found this simple brown DVF dress at a friend’s shop for $50!  The next thing I found were these gold and black sequence shoes from J. Crew.  Over time I found the fur vest on Ebay but with the shipping time, it would arrive with only 10 days to spare.  I really wasn’t sure if it would be perfect, but to my surprise it’s gorgeous.

I picked up the clutch on winter clearance at Lord & Taylor.  I chose it to tie the black and gold together with a bit of hard to play off the soft fur.  The last item I picked, which didn’t really end up showing is my gold and Swarovski crystal necklace.  But, I love it and am glad I bought it.  The symbol means, “double luck” in Chinese.’

Hair styled by Salon Sabeha, make up from Modern Priscilla, teeth whitening by Super Smile.

Aging & skincare

Just because you’re getting older every year doesn’t mean you have to look your age.  You can look better.  What I’ve learned from several experts is that when you take care of your skin, your skin will radiate and shine.  When your face shines, all you need is a bright smile and you will be more beautiful than ever.

Skincare Tips:

As I’ve gotten older, I make sure to wash my face every morning and before I go to bed.

Find a face wash that you like the texture and odor of…. so you enjoy & LOVE washing your face.

Twice a week a use a Clarisonic so that my skin gets a deeper cleaning.

I always wear moisturizer and to really be safe from sun damage, one with sunscreen.

I have eye creams and serums that I use often, but not all the time as I feel like a good moisturizer is all you need.

In the evening I wash, dry & remove eye makeup then apply a thick layer of night cream.

To enhance the overall look of your face, make sure you have the right color foundation and keep your everyday make up simple and shiny.  I love using a bronzer to brighten my cheeks.

Make sure your lips are hydrated and I’ve used a lip scrub at times to exfoliate my lips.

Eyebrow and lip waxing is essential.  I’m always amazed at how much brighter my eyes look after eyebrow shaping.

Everyone says it, but it’s true ‘Drink tons of water’.

My favorite products right now are: Philosophy’s ‘purity 3-in-1 cleanser for face & eyes’.  I like this because the odor is light, the product goes a long ways and it helps remove eye make up.  I follow up with  Philosophy’s ‘hope in a jar’.  I love the way it’s whipped and how it goes on my face really well.  I buy mine from “Making Faces“.

My favorite sunscreen is “Modern Priscilla replenishing sunblock”.  This product provides an spf of 36, provides light moisturizer, an antioxidant and is tinted!  I use this product with my ‘hope in a jar’ moisturizer.  I buy mine from “Modern Priscilla“.

At night I use “Neutrogena naturals”.  It is a multi-vitamin nourishing night cream that goes on well and smells refreshing.  I buy mine at “Ride Aid”.

Here are several older ladies that have flawless skin and yes look better than they did in their younger years!

Wardrobe Essentials this Fall into Winter

Every closet should be stocked with clothing staples and a few trendy items to ensure getting ready “made easy”, yet right.  You don’t have to be a hot mess and throw on those yoga pants, jeans, or slacks with whatever top you have.  If you have the right wardrobe essentials your outfits will look polished, sharp, smart and envy worthy.  If you follow these clothing tips with your wardrobe then getting dressed will be fun and easy.

Fall into Winter clothing & accessories to have in your wardrobe:

Staples: Long sleeve shirts in black, white or gray & 1 pop of color, Black leggings, Skinny Jeans, Skinny gold or silver belt, Black printed or solid scarf, Tall leather boots, Trench coat, Wool coat, White button down, LBD, Black skirt, Tights & Undergarments (thongs & push ups), Sweater vest, Black blazer, Basic sweaters in cream, black or gray, Denim shirt and make sure you have different socks (thick, wool, thin, high, ankle).

Trends: Leather Biker Jacket, Shoe booties, Black & white striped clothing, Floral on black, Plaid anything, Metallic finishes, Leopard or Animal prints, Pastel jackets & sweaters, Studs & Spikes, Leather or Pleather pants, Leather details on shirts, Pencil skirts, Faux or Fur coats, Chain link jewelry, Cutout clothing, Army clothing, Lace pieces, Heel booties, Over the knee boots, Velvet clothing.

Clothing Tip:  Keep your basics up to date-no fading, ironed & clean to wear all week and make sure you have plenty of clean undergarments and socks/tights on hand.  Keep your handbags and footwear wiped down and clean.  Jewelry should be organized and accessible to pile on.

How to wear your Basics and add your Trends:  Dress yourself mostly with your basics and add a trendy item or two.  Layering is the key to stylish dressing.  Decide if you’re in the mood to wear pencil skirt, black leggings or skinny jeans then decide what to wear on the top.  For example, if you go with a pencil skirt to be dressy, then go for a trendy blouse and decide if you’re going to layer your sweater vest, biker jacket, trench coat or black blazer on top.  Now figure out your shoes…try on your options in front of a long mirror.  Try the shoe booties, tall leather boots and heals to figure out which ones make the best looking outfit for the day.  Lastly, spice up your look with accessories and trends…scarfs, jewelry, belts and handbags.

Remember getting dressed is all about layering.  If your outfit isn’t right, then go back to your basic items and swap something out, for example if you’re wearing that pencil skirt and you like what it looks like, but is too dressy for the event your attending, then replace it for the back leggings or if really casual then put on your jeans.  Or if you just have to wear the pencil skirt but need a more casual look, wear a long sleeve basic shirt then either add a sweater or skip the sweater and layer your sweater vest, biker jacket or trench coat with your scarf.  If you have the right staples then making outfits is so easy.

My final advice on polishing your outfit for the day is to make sure your hair style and make up reflect and enhance your look.  You don’t have to have the perfect face, but if you’re going for a natural look make sure you have the right make up to correctly achieve this look.  With make up it all starts with the basics as well and layer to add different colors and make up trends to your look.  Really it’s the same concept!

If you’re closet is organized by color then getting dressed can be a breeze!

If you don’t have the time to make your closet work for you, I have a service that may work for you.
