At this age, know how to dress

Once I hit 40 I felt the need to ‘think’ about the way I looked at my wardrobe.  I want to dress appropriate for my age, but still feel young and can look fashionable, which can be done at any age.

Looking at my clothing I ask:

~ Is the quality of my clothing good?  No rips, holes, stains or faded clothing acceptable at this age.

~ Are my pieces of clothing enhancing my body?  Not too long or short, tight or big but giving me the right curves and hiding all the right things.

~ Do I have the right undergarments?  No panty lines are allowed and bras must be enhancing.

~ Do my shoes look fresh?  There is nothing worse than scuffed or dirty shoes on a great outfit.  I also make sure I have several different types of shoes with various heel size, color and style.

~ Do I have the right handbags?  Don’t skimp on a great bag.  You will be surprised at how many times you’ll use it if it’s a high end bag.  Less expensive bags are considered trendy and basically disposable.

~ Do I have a variety of accessories?  Gold, silver, chains, charms, chain link, watches, earning and trendy jewelry.

Without a doubt, I must have hair, nails and skin that look as good as possible.  I wash my face twice a day, hair every other and if I don’t have a fresh manicure then I keep my nails short and clean.

I care about my body so I do work out 3-5 times a week and eat clean as possible and drink plenty of liquids.  I started drinking warm water with lemon in the morning to jump start my digestive system, then coffee and light but mostly protein breakfast, tons of fruit and salads.

I do get between 7-9 hours of sleep every night and keep a pretty tight schedule during the day.

What I’ve found is that the key to knowing how to dress is balancing the outfit.  If you have on a flare skirt then wear a tank top or if my shirt is short then I wear a blazer to cover up.  When I wear leggings I wear a simple shirt then a longer sweater or blazer to cover up a little bit.

Right now I’m into wearing silk, blazers, layering and dressing in monochrome with one pop of color.

If you’re going to get dressed, why not do it better as you get older.  Every year work a little harder on something that you could do better.  It all becomes a habit and then the next thing you know you’ll look as good as you can!

My Juice cleanse

In a nutshell, my juice cleanse went better and was easier than I expected.  When I researched juicing, most of the cleanses were 3 days.  My goal was 5 days and I ended up strictly drinking freshly pressed juice, water with lemon and herbal tea for 4 days.  I learned a lot about myself and broke some habits.

My four day lowdown:

Before the fast:

I cut out meats, fried food and sweets a couple days before.

Day 1-4

9am  Hot water with lemon, 10am-7pm I drank 6 oz of fresh juice every three hours.  In between, I drank plenty of water and herbal tea.  Surprisingly, I never felt hungry but I did feel unsatisfied and had cravings.  What I loved about drinking just liquids is that I never had crashes or highs~ I always felt even.  No carb or sugar crashes!  I love having 1-3 cups of coffee every morning and really enjoy the smell, but for some reason I never smelled it and still don’t now!  My intention was to fast for a full 5 days, but I found since I work out daily that I was getting hungry for more at the end of day 3.  That evening I did have my juice and 1/4 of organic sweet potato with olive oil.  The evening of day 4 I ate a sweet potato and homemade guacamole with tortilla chips (which I craved!).  I like the corn one.  I also make slow cooked brown rice and had a couple of bites.

Day 5 I drank fresh juice in the morning and ate raw veggies and fruits for snacks and a salad for lunch.  For dinner my husband make homemade pizza and I had mine with cheese and fresh sliced tomatoes.  Day 6 ate simply but attending a party and enjoyed two homemade chicken nuggets and my wild rice salad and other salads.

After the fast:

Never felt better!  My stomach aces are gone.   I’m off caffeine, excedrin, sugar, mostly dairy and gluten.  I honestly am not smelling coffee any longer or even crave it.  I’ve replaced most of my carbohydrate items with rice or gluten free foods.  Don’t get me wrong- if there’s something fabulous to eat I will have a small portion.  I’m really craving my juice, so a couple days a week I have one!

What I juiced:

I’m a throw it all in gal!  Must be all Organic & washed well before you place into your juicer and DRINK IMMEDIATELY.  When you store any left over juice for the day, place in a thermos or jar with very little air on top in a brown paper bag.  Light is not our friend with juice- diminishes the nutrients.

Morning 6oz- whole pear, apple, cucumber, 2 sticks celery, 2 carrots, inch of ginger, half a lime or lemon and the best, spearmint or peppermint!

1:00, 4:00 & 7:00, 6oz.- whole apple, cucumber, 4 sticks celery, 4 carrots, inch or two of ginger, lime or lemon, chunk of fennel ball, couple pieces of garlic, chunk of sweet potato, banana, orange, red pepper, shallot, baby kale, spinach, parsley and more!!

Body results:

I don’t weigh myself but I did notice my clothes feeling looser and lost my lower belly tube.  Overall, this was the perfect thing to do to feel better, look better and just in time for summer!

Inside Out

I believe beauty starts on the inside.  Taking care of myself is very important to me and I know you eventually see the benefits on the outside.  Not only do I exercise, drink plenty of water and sleep well, I practice meditation and sometimes cleanse by body.  I know it seems a bit much, but with everything we put our bodies I find it to be a meaningful exercise.  The benefits of cleansing can be found on several sites, but here are some that I found to be helpful,  Dr. Oz and Ezine Articles.

A year ago, I started focusing on my skin and wash my face every night and morning and pay close attention to wearing sunscreen.  I’ve always worked out a couple day’s a week and would try to squeeze in a walk here an there, but something switched in me and I decided it was time to go for it and in October I started working out 5 days a week and on the other days make sure to get a walk in.  It’s been 9 months and am hooked.

The more you work on your body the better you eat!  I’m happy with what I’m eating but am ready to detox my body.  It is hard, but I really want to do it.  I love the mental challenge and interested to see what happens with my body.

I don’t normally share photos of my body, but for this purpose, I think it’s helpful to see the before and after photos.  I’ll journal and post my process of the next 5 days of my Juice Cleanse.  Oh and I know, I’m skinny and I don’t need to loose weight, that’s not what this is about.  It’s more about the benefits of the cleanse and it just so happens that loosing weight is a side affect, but for me I’m going to continue working out and having SO many veggies that I’ll be getting everything I need!  ~XX

Steps to getting dressed for a special event

If you want to stand out at an event, you must prepare well in advance to look appropriate and as beautiful as you can be.

  • 6-8 weeks before an event I start looking at dresses on line and I may even order one or two.  I enjoy shopping at sites that offer free shipping and returns.  Sometimes I’ll find a dress locally, but I give myself plenty of time for altering.  I like seeing what is trending and find inspiration on various sites.  It may be a dress length, color, cut or certain style that I decide to go with.  Once I decide what I want my “wow” piece to be, then I get focused.  For example, my last event I decided to wear fur and I wanted that to be my ‘wow’ piece so I decided to find a simple dress that wouldn’t take away for the fur.  Then the shoes were just as interesting but the jewelry was simple.  To see the fur, I needed my hair up, but wanted it to have an Old Hollywood feel.  Other times I want to dress color to be the ‘wow’ factor.  Then I keep the shoes neutral.
  • 4-5 weeks I make sure I’ve thought about my ‘vision’ of what I want the rest of the outfit to consist of.  I order shoes and jewelry with plenty of time for returns and reordering.
  • 4 weeks make sure you have hair and nail appointments set up for a couple of days before and a hair appointment on the day of your event.
  •  2 weeks before I nail down an inspirational hair photo.  I make sure I have the right handbag and coat to wear.
  • 1 week before I may attention to my body, face and teeth.  I make sure that I watch my sugar intake and regularly hit the gym.  I make sure that my face is kept clean and use my Clarisonic every other day.  I use Super Smile, which is a teeth whitening system.
  • 3-1 day before I make sure I get a fresh hair color, cut, eyebrow wax and toes and fingernails polished.   Also, steam your dress and make sure you have everything you may need, like padding for your heels, appropriate undergarments, double stick tape, and your lipstick.
  • Day of the event I I limit my water intake to avoid bloating.  In place of water I drink cranberry and coconut water.  I make sure I eat a big breakfast and protein filled lunch and plenty of snacking before I attend the event.
  • I shower making sure I wash my face and shave my legs and around 5 hours before the event I get my hair done.
  • 2 hours before we need to leave, I put my make up on.  I often have thought about the style of my face…do I go for a colorful eye, smokey eye or bold lipstick.  Decide what you want to enhance and make sure you’ve found colors that are trending and enhance your dress.  For example, when I wore a bright yellow dress I decided to go with bright pink lips and simple eye make up.  With the latest brown dress I went for a bronzed face.
  • 1 hour before I get dressed, pack my purse, brush my teeth and give myself time to snap a few photo before leaving.

If you follow this timeline or make your own, you’ll be sure to have a cohesive and polished look for any special event.

Aging & skincare

Just because you’re getting older every year doesn’t mean you have to look your age.  You can look better.  What I’ve learned from several experts is that when you take care of your skin, your skin will radiate and shine.  When your face shines, all you need is a bright smile and you will be more beautiful than ever.

Skincare Tips:

As I’ve gotten older, I make sure to wash my face every morning and before I go to bed.

Find a face wash that you like the texture and odor of…. so you enjoy & LOVE washing your face.

Twice a week a use a Clarisonic so that my skin gets a deeper cleaning.

I always wear moisturizer and to really be safe from sun damage, one with sunscreen.

I have eye creams and serums that I use often, but not all the time as I feel like a good moisturizer is all you need.

In the evening I wash, dry & remove eye makeup then apply a thick layer of night cream.

To enhance the overall look of your face, make sure you have the right color foundation and keep your everyday make up simple and shiny.  I love using a bronzer to brighten my cheeks.

Make sure your lips are hydrated and I’ve used a lip scrub at times to exfoliate my lips.

Eyebrow and lip waxing is essential.  I’m always amazed at how much brighter my eyes look after eyebrow shaping.

Everyone says it, but it’s true ‘Drink tons of water’.

My favorite products right now are: Philosophy’s ‘purity 3-in-1 cleanser for face & eyes’.  I like this because the odor is light, the product goes a long ways and it helps remove eye make up.  I follow up with  Philosophy’s ‘hope in a jar’.  I love the way it’s whipped and how it goes on my face really well.  I buy mine from “Making Faces“.

My favorite sunscreen is “Modern Priscilla replenishing sunblock”.  This product provides an spf of 36, provides light moisturizer, an antioxidant and is tinted!  I use this product with my ‘hope in a jar’ moisturizer.  I buy mine from “Modern Priscilla“.

At night I use “Neutrogena naturals”.  It is a multi-vitamin nourishing night cream that goes on well and smells refreshing.  I buy mine at “Ride Aid”.

Here are several older ladies that have flawless skin and yes look better than they did in their younger years!
