Style finder 2

Step two to finding your own style. Closet clean out.

Is your closet packed? I go through times when my closet is swallowing me up and I can’t stand it anymore. That’s when I take a step back and start the purging process. Going through everything all at once is too big of a task for me, so I purge often.

The second step to finding your style is, ‘only wear and keep items that you love’. Words that I’ve heard Marie Kondo say over and over! There are several reasons you may love an item.

We make priceless memories wearing our clothing and have attachments to where they came from. Clothing helps to enhance our lives and we can become attached to them. I do love some items more than others and find myself wearing the same things over and over. Sometimes 2/3 of my clothes are ignored. This is definitely due to the season we’re in and activities I’m doing.

There are some exceptions to the rule ‘keep what you love’. If you have something that you’ve had forever, that doesn’t mean you should keep it. Think about if you’re still using it and if not, why not? Also, why are you attached to it? For example, I had a leather skirt that I used to wear in High School and I loved it because it was pretty, it cost me a lot of buy at the time and I have great memories wearing it. But it no longer fits and I’m never going to wear it again. I parted with it, even though I loved it.

All your clothing should fit you. Yes, try everything on only keep items that flatter your body. I just tried on all my shorts and was upset that a pair of shorts I bought two years ago didn’t flatter me anymore. Our bodies are always changing and what we think might still look good, often doesn’t. Don’t beat yourself up over it, just let it go and continue to focus on your task.

If your item doesn’t fit and you still love it the big question I ask myself is, “if something happened to me, would my family want this”? Pretty telling that my answer is usually, no. It’s gotta go. No worries because you will be left with plenty of items that fit and flatter you!

The idea of having a closet full of items you love is about wearing your clothing with confidence. If your clothes flatter your body and you love them, then you’ll love making great outfits everyday.

Remember Step 1 to finding your style is, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. By purging your clothing and only keeping what you love, you’ll wear outfits with confidence, feel beautiful and be yourself.

As daunting as it may seem, get busy and purge, purge, purge. You’ll be surprised at how good you’ll feel!
