Working your clothing into Fall

If you’re like me then your addicted to your summer fav’s, but as the weather gets cooler you can still wear some items.  Just edit your looks by adding and layering clothing to your summer outfits.

Shorts~ keep wearing them.  Instead of a tank, wear a T and add a sweater or blazer.

Thank You Gifts

Give a gift that counts.  It should be thoughtful, pretty and make sense.  Think about the person you are giving the gift to and ask yourself if, ‘they would like and appreciate it’, if not then go to plan B.  When I give teacher/staff gifts I want to say within a maximum budge of $5.  We do go in on a ‘class gift’ for the regular teachers, but I like to give to the supporting staff and principals.  I start thinking about gift a month before school ends.  That way I give myself enough time to shop on a budget.

We tried planting Peppermint seeds, but they didn’t germinate in time, but still made a really fun gift to give.  I found these pops just as they are at “The Christmas Tree Shop” for $3.99.  I wrote “thank you” myself, added tissue &  used a close pin for the tea bag.

DSC_0243

Colorful tissue adds interested to the gift.

I like to use baskets to deliver gifts with the boys in school.

DSC_0248

I found they great peanut shaped ‘Inspire’ dishes at Micheal’s for $1.99.

IMG_4460

Collect all your items then figure out the best ways to put everything together.  I like the give to be on display and not in a gift bag.  Gift bags are expensive and I’ve found you don’t need them if you have tissue paper and ribbon!

DSC_0247

I picked this canister up at Micheal’s for $2.99, added Red Sox peanuts for $1.99 and wrote “thanks for being our Healthy Nut”.  This was for the Gym teacher!

DSC_0246

I had already had tissue paper, “thank you” stickers and ribbon on hand, making this an easy gift to put together.

IMG_4467

I picked up some of these bath goods at the local grocery store for $1.99 and the soap was on clearance at Micheal’s for $1.00.

IMG_4463

I used tissue, ribbon and a sticker to put the gift together.

IMG_4464

On some I cut out paper and used double stick tape to attach to the ribbon.

Just use what you have!

Be creative!

Steps to getting dressed for a special event

If you want to stand out at an event, you must prepare well in advance to look appropriate and as beautiful as you can be.

  • 6-8 weeks before an event I start looking at dresses on line and I may even order one or two.  I enjoy shopping at sites that offer free shipping and returns.  Sometimes I’ll find a dress locally, but I give myself plenty of time for altering.  I like seeing what is trending and find inspiration on various sites.  It may be a dress length, color, cut or certain style that I decide to go with.  Once I decide what I want my “wow” piece to be, then I get focused.  For example, my last event I decided to wear fur and I wanted that to be my ‘wow’ piece so I decided to find a simple dress that wouldn’t take away for the fur.  Then the shoes were just as interesting but the jewelry was simple.  To see the fur, I needed my hair up, but wanted it to have an Old Hollywood feel.  Other times I want to dress color to be the ‘wow’ factor.  Then I keep the shoes neutral.
  • 4-5 weeks I make sure I’ve thought about my ‘vision’ of what I want the rest of the outfit to consist of.  I order shoes and jewelry with plenty of time for returns and reordering.
  • 4 weeks make sure you have hair and nail appointments set up for a couple of days before and a hair appointment on the day of your event.
  •  2 weeks before I nail down an inspirational hair photo.  I make sure I have the right handbag and coat to wear.
  • 1 week before I may attention to my body, face and teeth.  I make sure that I watch my sugar intake and regularly hit the gym.  I make sure that my face is kept clean and use my Clarisonic every other day.  I use Super Smile, which is a teeth whitening system.
  • 3-1 day before I make sure I get a fresh hair color, cut, eyebrow wax and toes and fingernails polished.   Also, steam your dress and make sure you have everything you may need, like padding for your heels, appropriate undergarments, double stick tape, and your lipstick.
  • Day of the event I I limit my water intake to avoid bloating.  In place of water I drink cranberry and coconut water.  I make sure I eat a big breakfast and protein filled lunch and plenty of snacking before I attend the event.
  • I shower making sure I wash my face and shave my legs and around 5 hours before the event I get my hair done.
  • 2 hours before we need to leave, I put my make up on.  I often have thought about the style of my face…do I go for a colorful eye, smokey eye or bold lipstick.  Decide what you want to enhance and make sure you’ve found colors that are trending and enhance your dress.  For example, when I wore a bright yellow dress I decided to go with bright pink lips and simple eye make up.  With the latest brown dress I went for a bronzed face.
  • 1 hour before I get dressed, pack my purse, brush my teeth and give myself time to snap a few photo before leaving.

If you follow this timeline or make your own, you’ll be sure to have a cohesive and polished look for any special event.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the most glamorous dress of all.................... Oh I do Darling................ Oh my, I'm feeling a deja vu coming on, and that reminds me, I need to call Savannah in A Southern Home.....

Going for Old Hollywood

Old Hollywood reminds me of hair pinned up, bright lips, gold shoes and fur.  When I dress for a special occasion, just putting on a pretty dress is not enough.  I enjoy having a vision and this time my vision started with wearing a fur.  I didn’t own a fur, or any of my look but I get jazzed by the challenge of finding my outfit.  The fundraiser was held at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston for Jaden’s Ladder.  When I’m at a classy hotel, I like to dress the part.

The skinny on my look~

I found this simple brown DVF dress at a friend’s shop for $50!  The next thing I found were these gold and black sequence shoes from J. Crew.  Over time I found the fur vest on Ebay but with the shipping time, it would arrive with only 10 days to spare.  I really wasn’t sure if it would be perfect, but to my surprise it’s gorgeous.

I picked up the clutch on winter clearance at Lord & Taylor.  I chose it to tie the black and gold together with a bit of hard to play off the soft fur.  The last item I picked, which didn’t really end up showing is my gold and Swarovski crystal necklace.  But, I love it and am glad I bought it.  The symbol means, “double luck” in Chinese.’

Hair styled by Salon Sabeha, make up from Modern Priscilla, teeth whitening by Super Smile.

Dress $50, J.Crew Shoes $32 (clearance), Fur $75, Swarovski necklace $60 (outlet), clutch $28

Total cost $245

Introducing my new Living Room

After 13 years, last March I decided it was time to revamp the living room!  We were using our 13 year sofa that was all wrong.  The rug is only 10 years old, but I was ready for a new style.  Since my kids were babies I’ve used a round soft ottoman with tray on top, but now the kids are 6 and 9 time to have some sharp corners!  Our tv was in a cabinet which was outdated as well.

The Process

Cover the sofa or buy a new one….we bought a new one!

Painted the wall a new lighter creamy color.

Cover the chair or buy a new one….new one of course!

Swapped out the rug for a new style.  My old style was more traditional and now I like cozy mod.

Ditched the TV, stand and ottoman

                       Before                                                                           After

DSC_0016DSC_0077

I wanted a more neutral and cohesive look when you walked into my living room.  The focal point is the fireplace and after I painted it, it felt so fresh and light and that’s when I made the decision to start “Project Living room”.

The old wall color was a brownish taupe that worked really well with gold tones.  Painting the walls was my first change and I went for a creamy color.  The color really lightened up the room and gave me room to play with the upholstery colors.  Before I was really stuck with golden/taupe sofa.

Moving away from brown tones to cream tones gave me the freedom to switch to gray.  I loved going for a deeper sofa color since all the walls went so much lighter.

You can also see my old oriental rug in photo above with my old chesterfield sofa.  Below is my new chevron rug in gray and cream.

I ditched the soft round ottoman and added two square mirrored tables that I had from three years ago.  I picked them up at Target for $35.00 each.

Before my sofa faced our fireplace but once I knew I was ready for a change, I wanted to have a chaise on my sofa and move it to the right of our fireplace.  The antique brown cabinet stores my china, candles and various decor items.

I didn’t want to have the TV in a cabinet any longer, so I talked my husband into getting a flat screen and console.

 DSC_0079

I found this stunning mirror and silver Paltrow Console Table on Joss and Main for $450.  This console not only matches my coffee tables, but my starburst mirror that is high above my fireplace.

Though the brown paisley chair was so cozy with the matching ottoman, it was worn out and ready for a new home.  Our new chair is in a solid light gray.  By keeping the sofa and chair print free, I had the freedom to go bold on the floor and will have fun with throw pillows and blankets.

I accessorize with antique, new and collectables.  The mantel turned out far better than expected.  Several items are one of a kind, from various trips my father in law took.  The large jar is filled with beach finds than my boys search endlessly in the summer on several Maine beaches.  The other two tables in the room are antique finds.  The mirror and copper bowl of over sized grapes are also antiques from our family.  I’m not afraid to repaint things as you can see from the items that are hung high over the mantel.  I have several framed photographs and figurines that are put away or in other rooms, but if there’s anything I can’t say enough is ‘edit’ and ‘edit again’.  Less is more and quality is always better.

Invitations set the tone

Recently I threw a wedding shower and I believe that the way to throw a good party is to start with a stunning first impression, the invitation.  I’m a bit old fashioned and adore getting personalized notes and cards in the mail.  It mean so much more when people actually take the time to hand write anything.  The same goes for the invitation.

I’ve done all kinds of invitations but mostly ones that I get designed then print myself.  Printing yourself cuts costs and I like to actually pick out my own paper.  In order to get an invitation personalized, you must make sure to give yourself plenty of time to research, communicate, wait for drafts and then sit though changes and mailing of the invitations.  For me, if the party is important, I like to get an invitation in the mail eight weeks in advance.  For a smaller casual party, you can go anywhere from three to six weeks.  Summer is tough as schedules get filled quickly, so earlier the better!

I find Etsy to have the best premade invitation designs that you can personalized, meaning pick your colors and any other important details that need to be printed on your invitation.

Here is the invitation that I purchased for the shower

DSC_0031

I wanted to add a bit more detailing to this invitation by using the pink paper doilies and vintage ribbon it gave a shabby chic feel.  The doilies are from The Salvage and the ribbon is from Laces and Trims for You.

The outside of the envelope can make a big presence as well!  Think about the stamp, return labels and ink color you use.

DSC_0042

I fell in love with these heart, “Yes, I do” floral stamps!  I bought inexpensive return labels from Vistaprint.

I added a note, handmade lace money envelope and a ‘wishes’ card along with this invitation.  When printing the notes make sure to use paper within your color scheme.

DSC_0046

The customized “Wishes” card came from Event Printables

Your invitation really does set the tone on how the party should feel when guests arrive.  There is nothing better than being invited to a fabulous party!

Affordable outfits can be created for events!

Once I was invited to the Denim & Dimonds Event I immediately started by outfit wheel.

I went to the Wear House and bought this fab skirt for $25!!  I hit the Victoria Secret sale’s rack and found the bodysuit for $17.  I knew I needed to cover up, so I dug out my oldie but goodie DKNY jean jacket.  I picked up the peace clutch at Fashioneta for $30.  My shoes came from Macy’s for $76.  I piled on jewelry I already had and placed eye lashes on and painted my own nails.  Makeup from Making Faces and hair compliments of Salon Sabeha.  At the event, photos were taken by The Chick Who Clicks.  Thank you for your wonderful support.

Getting Ready for Denim & Diamonds

I’m attending a fund raising event called “Denim & Diamonds” this Saturday.  The cause is to to support, Jaden’s Ladder a non-profit organization that helps abused women in the area not only with shelter but an entire support system that enables long term guidance and self-reliance.

It is in the evening and there will be dinner and a silent auction.  I always love wearing something a tad more formal or dressy.  I didn’t want to just wear a dress and add diamond necklaces, and I love a good challenge when it comes to dressing up.  I picked up this raw silk skirt that has a lot of charm and I’ve let my imagination run wild from there!

DSC_0023

Since the raw silk is silvery-gray I knew I had to figure out how to add some bling to the waist area.

DSC_0039

I picked up this band of diamond-like 2 yard “Bling” at a local craft store.

DSC_0025

The skirt is long and the best way for me to balance it’s length is to wear a tight cami.  In this case, it’s from Vicki Secret’s so it’s bit skimpy than I’m comfortable with (COLD).

DSC_0037

The rhinestones and cami are goldish so I picked up some diamond bling to add.

DSC_0042

I used tweezers and jewel glue and added the diamonds throughout the other stones for contrast.

DSC_0023

I’m wearing a nude shoe without bling as the skirt is long and has a slight poof at the base.

Tom Binns Mega-Pile-On Pearl And Diamond Necklace

Piling up the necklaces to cover up!

rough texture, the jacket has a lot of texture and stuff on it to give the jean jacket rough texture

In order to keep myself warm from my skimpy lace cami, you guessed it~ a denim jacket!

Hair inspiration to keep all the attention on the diamond bling!
Like with any great party, getting ready is a process.  All good things take time.  Figuring out the rest of the details will come this week.  Nails, necklaces, purse, make up, lashes….it all adds up to one gorgeous night.
The final looks will be posted and as will others from the evening!!  I can’t wait to see how creative people get with this fun theme!  {wink}
