At this age, know how to dress

Once I hit 40 I felt the need to ‘think’ about the way I looked at my wardrobe.  I want to dress appropriate for my age, but still feel young and can look fashionable, which can be done at any age.

Looking at my clothing I ask:

~ Is the quality of my clothing good?  No rips, holes, stains or faded clothing acceptable at this age.

~ Are my pieces of clothing enhancing my body?  Not too long or short, tight or big but giving me the right curves and hiding all the right things.

~ Do I have the right undergarments?  No panty lines are allowed and bras must be enhancing.

~ Do my shoes look fresh?  There is nothing worse than scuffed or dirty shoes on a great outfit.  I also make sure I have several different types of shoes with various heel size, color and style.

~ Do I have the right handbags?  Don’t skimp on a great bag.  You will be surprised at how many times you’ll use it if it’s a high end bag.  Less expensive bags are considered trendy and basically disposable.

~ Do I have a variety of accessories?  Gold, silver, chains, charms, chain link, watches, earning and trendy jewelry.

Without a doubt, I must have hair, nails and skin that look as good as possible.  I wash my face twice a day, hair every other and if I don’t have a fresh manicure then I keep my nails short and clean.

I care about my body so I do work out 3-5 times a week and eat clean as possible and drink plenty of liquids.  I started drinking warm water with lemon in the morning to jump start my digestive system, then coffee and light but mostly protein breakfast, tons of fruit and salads.

I do get between 7-9 hours of sleep every night and keep a pretty tight schedule during the day.

What I’ve found is that the key to knowing how to dress is balancing the outfit.  If you have on a flare skirt then wear a tank top or if my shirt is short then I wear a blazer to cover up.  When I wear leggings I wear a simple shirt then a longer sweater or blazer to cover up a little bit.

Right now I’m into wearing silk, blazers, layering and dressing in monochrome with one pop of color.

If you’re going to get dressed, why not do it better as you get older.  Every year work a little harder on something that you could do better.  It all becomes a habit and then the next thing you know you’ll look as good as you can!

Celebrate in Style

If you’re getting ready for a major celebration then may I suggest you have the ‘it’ party decor, a Frilloon!  It’s everything, glamorous, sweet, perfect, stunning and oh so fancy.  The way it floats is so romantic with the long eye catching tassel making it fun to hold or stand on its own.

Frilloons can be used just about anywhere and add so much fun to any event as they are customizable~ any color combo you can think of or all in one color makes a great statement!  Imagine an all red Frilloon for a valentine’s celebration.

I used one this New Years Eve and I’d have to say it was so eye catching because you don’t normally see such a big balloon, but add the amazing tassels and it become beautiful and so impressive.

Frilloons are by a Minneapolis company called, ‘White Peacock Styled Events’.  The balloons can be shipped and will add wonder and style to your next event.

Planning a Party

Sharing a special occasion with a celebration should be well thought about.  As always, great presentation is in the details.  Think about the location, setting, food & drink and don’t forget the decor.  Decorations can be as simple as specialized cups, plates, napkins, signs, balloons and more.  It doesn’t have to be ‘over the top’ to make the party special, just keep things simple and do them well!

Cups~ can be a lot of fun as there are so many great inexpensive options and don’t forget that you can embellish them!  Here are the one’s I recently made using three different stickers.  All the glasses don’t have to be the same and the guest of honor should have a special cup!  Don’t forget the small cups~ they can be decorated as well!

Salonista Style not to be missed

I joined the “Salonista Style” team a few weeks ago and was able to wear this AMAZINGLY flattering dress for the studio opening.  What I love about it that it’s white, classy and sexy.  The zippers in gold add interest in all the right places, enhancing the cut of the dress.

White for Spring events

I do love attending charity events and recently attended the annual Wentworth by the Sea Crossroads gala.  I don’t like keeping my look the same and enjoy experimenting with new hair and make up styles.  My beaded dress felt appropriate for a Spring event by the water.  It was on the shorter side, white and the beads are stitched in a slight chevron style.  The shoes stood out and I wanted them to have that bootie feel.  When I think of spring make up on my olive complexion I think of bright pink.  My toes and fingers along with my lips were covered in a deep pink color.  I layered on two long necklaces to give a flapper feel.  My hair dresser felt that I needed some pretty bling in my hair, so we stuck with a silvery sparkly flower.

A feel of History

My house has exposed wood beams and everyone seems to enjoy how different they make the room feel.  I find that when wood beams, bricks or early wood floors are added or exposed in a home, it adds so much depth and character to a home without trying.  Here are some examples of rooms that feel like they have a touch of history to them.  What I love about all these rooms is they don’t feel entirely ‘old’, the historical elements add character to these updated rooms.  Classic mix!

Make your own custom art

I’m picky about what I’ll display in my home or clients homes.  I do like rooms to feel personal and decided my mantle needed our last name initial.  This DIY was pretty simple and recommend you making your own.

Supplies you need:  Burlap, paint, pencil, font type, glue, and frame

The process:   Find the frame you’ll be using first.  Make sure it fits well on your mantel and I recommend using a glassless frame.  If you use a frame with glass then glue your fabric on the glass.

Measure the area inside of the frame.  Cut your fabric to size.  No worries if you’re off a bit, as I was then just grabbed some trim I had and glued that layer on to cover my mistakes.  You can use any kind of plain fabric.  I like added texture, so went for burlap.

Find the font you want to use.  There are so many fonts out there.  Check out tootledoo designs, as they are amazing!  You can write anything you want, a full monogram, entire last name, or just an initial.  You may want to enlarge one of the fonts and copy it, make a stencil and trace on your fabric, or freehand it using pencil.

Once you’ve drawn your letter, go ahead and use a smaller brush to apply paint (any kind works) on the outline of the letter.  Then fill in the entire letter with paint.

After the paint drys decide if your letter needs anything else.  You may want to outline the letter in another color, or glitter…think about what makes sense with your style.  Go ahead and use clear glue on the surface of your frame.  Affix your fabric and let dry.  Add any additional trim on the inside of your frame.

Aging & skincare

Just because you’re getting older every year doesn’t mean you have to look your age.  You can look better.  What I’ve learned from several experts is that when you take care of your skin, your skin will radiate and shine.  When your face shines, all you need is a bright smile and you will be more beautiful than ever.

Skincare Tips:

As I’ve gotten older, I make sure to wash my face every morning and before I go to bed.

Find a face wash that you like the texture and odor of…. so you enjoy & LOVE washing your face.

Twice a week a use a Clarisonic so that my skin gets a deeper cleaning.

I always wear moisturizer and to really be safe from sun damage, one with sunscreen.

I have eye creams and serums that I use often, but not all the time as I feel like a good moisturizer is all you need.

In the evening I wash, dry & remove eye makeup then apply a thick layer of night cream.

To enhance the overall look of your face, make sure you have the right color foundation and keep your everyday make up simple and shiny.  I love using a bronzer to brighten my cheeks.

Make sure your lips are hydrated and I’ve used a lip scrub at times to exfoliate my lips.

Eyebrow and lip waxing is essential.  I’m always amazed at how much brighter my eyes look after eyebrow shaping.

Everyone says it, but it’s true ‘Drink tons of water’.

My favorite products right now are: Philosophy’s ‘purity 3-in-1 cleanser for face & eyes’.  I like this because the odor is light, the product goes a long ways and it helps remove eye make up.  I follow up with  Philosophy’s ‘hope in a jar’.  I love the way it’s whipped and how it goes on my face really well.  I buy mine from “Making Faces“.

My favorite sunscreen is “Modern Priscilla replenishing sunblock”.  This product provides an spf of 36, provides light moisturizer, an antioxidant and is tinted!  I use this product with my ‘hope in a jar’ moisturizer.  I buy mine from “Modern Priscilla“.

At night I use “Neutrogena naturals”.  It is a multi-vitamin nourishing night cream that goes on well and smells refreshing.  I buy mine at “Ride Aid”.

Here are several older ladies that have flawless skin and yes look better than they did in their younger years!
